Gear Reducer
Amarillo Gear Company’s cooling tower gearboxes and drive shafts have design features and ratings that ensure reliability and long life in the demanding environment of a cooling tower. Many mechanical equipment producers offer suitable speed reducers in response to these specifications. These units are designed for more forgiving commercial applications, typically unprepared for the rigors and peculiarities of cooling tower service, such as the corrosive effects of operation within an exceedingly humid environment. As a result, both the lifespan of these commercial speed reducers and the thermal efficiency of the cooling towers on which they are installed frequently suffer.

Housing and Casting:
The robust design and construction of castings allows them to withstand internal and exterior loads with little deflection. In order to guarantee constant alignment of bearings and gears under load, gear case and cove are produced. The gear case’s floor is slanted, adding stiffness and allowing for full oil drainage. For excellent noise and vibration absorption, all casting components are made of cast iron. All mating castings are sealed using formed-in-place gasket material, which eliminates weeping that is common with fiber-type gaskets. Pilot holes are pre-drilled into gear cases to make it easier to install dowel pins.
Spiral Bevel Gears:
Amarillo Gear Company developed and produced the fan drive components. All spiral bevel gears are precisely fabricated in pairs from high-grade alloy steel, which is then case hardened and lapped.
Bearings:
Amarillo Gear is an industry leader with L10a bearing life exceeding 100,000 hours on all bearings. The fan shaft bearings are designed to carry all loads imposed by the fan while maintaining this outstanding bearing life. Only trusted brand bearings such as Timken and SKF are installed in Amarillo fan drives.
Low Noise:
The Amarillo Drives’ low operation noise is made possible by meticulous design and a regulated component production process. Our engineers have applied the latest research in the design and production of every component since they are aware of all the various factors that influence gear noise.
Shaft Seals:
Both the input and output shaft openings have 2 spring loaded and single lip seals to keep outside contamination from entering the gear box. Adding on, the output shaft has a labyrinth-type plate direclty mounted to the shaft.
Lubrication:
Large slinger on the input shaft offers optimum lubrication when operating at half speed or in either direction. On all units, there is a permanently mounted oil sight glass that allows for a direct visual assessment of the oil level.
Low Speed Operation:
For operation when motor speeds are less than 450rpm, single reduction fan drives require Amarillo Gear’s exclusive “Low Speed” option, and double reduction fan dries require a mechanical oil pump for proper lubrication. The addition of these options allow operation with no minimum input speed restrictions.
